Resource Center for Magnetic Resonance of SPbSU is an interfaculty and interdisciplinary laboratory that provides access to the equipment, infrastructure and practical experience of its employees to perform and support researches in all areas of the natural sciences that use the capabilities of nuclear magnetic, nuclear quadrupole and electron paramagnetic resonance and microtomography.

The complexity of the work can vary from the simple, so-called routine, to very complicated, requiring combinations of several techniques of magnetic resonance. The center includes a number of modern spectrometers for samples in liquid, amorphous and crystalline phases, at temperatures ranging from 4 K to 870 K (depending on the device and methods).

Equipment of Center:

- NMR spectrometer Bruker Avance 500 MHz for measuring of 1D, 2D and 3D spectra of liquids and solutions.

- NMR spectrometer Bruker WB Avance 400 MHz is intended for examination of solid phase samples: crystals, powders, weakly ordered materials, amorphous materials, the nanostructures (zeolites, silicates), etc.

- NMR spectrometer Bruker DPX 300 MHz and two Bruker Avance 400 MHz spectrometers for routine service measurements of one-dimensional and two-dimensional 1H spectra of nuclei in the range of 31P to 15N.

- EPR spectrometer Bruker Elexsys E580 for investigation of solids (including monocrystals), liquids and aqueous solutions.

- NMR/NQR spectrometer Tecmaq Redstone is a versatile multi-pulse spectrometer operating in the range of 1–500 MHz and allows one to obtain spectral and NMR relaxation characteristics in magnetically ordered materials and NQR. Currently working range of the spectrometer is 27–120MHz.

«Center of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry»

ThermoThe Center supports basic and applied researches, requiring thermal analysis and determination of the thermodynamic properties of substances and materials. Scope covers the study of various chemical and physico-chemical processes, including chemical reactions, phase transitions, dissolution, sorption, adsorption, polymerization, etc.

The Centre provides a wide range of thermal analysis methods: thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and classical methods of adiabatic calorimetry. The center is planned to prepare bachelors, masters and PhD students, conducting training courses in the field of thermal analysis methods and scientific seminars.

Equipment of Center:

- A series of devices thermogravimetric analysis and simultaneous thermal analysis with the gas phase by IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (TG 209 F3 Iris and STA 409 C/4/G Jupiter, NETZSCH)

- Scanning calorimeters based on DSC 204 F1 Phoenix ® NETZSCH adiabatic calorimeter Calvet (C80, SETARAM), isothermal calorimeter TAM III. TA Instruments)

- Microcalorimeter μDSC 3 EVO SETARAM

- Titration microcalorimeter Nano ITC 2G TA Instruments

- Sorption analyzer TGA Q5000SA, thermal desorption and chemisorption analyzer AutoChem 2920

- Unique differential scanning high pressure calorimeter DSC 204 HP/1/G Phoenix ® NETZSCH (for studies at pressures up to 150 bar).

- Unique high synchronous thermal analyzer with NETZSCH STA 409 Skimmer system and mass spectrometer QMS 422 for the study at temperatures up to 2000 °C.

«Innovative Technologies of Composite Nanomaterials»

4_engMain goals of the Centre:

1.     Enhancement of research activities of scientists, postgraduates and students in the area of composite nanomaterial technology and in new areas of research in materials science;

2.     Development of scientific relations with research groups within the St. Petersburg State University, with research centers in Russia and abroad;

3.     Improved training of graduate students, postgraduates in the area of modern materials science;

4.     Support in implementation of innovative research of University scientists in competitive technologies.

The Centre equipment can be used for implementation of various technologies:

  • ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) method allows to carry out the precision synthesis of thin conformal films of various compounds on the surface of substrates both flat and irregular shape including the trenches and pores.
  • Thin films spin-coating
  • Hydro- and solvothermal synthesis of nanodispersed materials
  • Synthesis of new ceramics
  • Synthesis of composites based on polymer matrix
  • Matrix synthesis of grafted organic compounds

Equipment of Center:

- Desctop testing mashine AG-50kNXD (Shimadzu).

- Microhardness tester HMV-2T (Shimadzu) for determination of hardness by Vickers, Knupp and Brunel. Applied load of 0.01- 120 g. Exposure time of 5–1,000 sec.

- Automated system ASAP 2020MP (Micromeritics) for analyzing of surface area and studying porous structure of disperse materials.

- Laser particle size analyzer Mastersizer 3000 (Malvern)

- Materials thermal testing device SETSYS Evolution 16

- Energy dispersing X-ray fluorescence spectrometer of EDX 800HS (Shimadzu)

- Spectral ellipsometry complex Ellipse 1891 SAG (wavelength range 350–1000 nm)

- Agilent B1500A unit bundled with PM-5 (Cascade Microtech) probe station

- Measuring complex comprising Solartron 1260 A, potentiostat Solartron1287 unit to measure high-frequency characteristics of materials, ProboStat measuring cell, tubing oven and ProGasMix gas mixtures preparation unit allows measurement of electrochemical and electrophysical properties of materials in a wide temperature range (up to 1200оС), in various gas environments at frequencies up to 32 MHz.

- Novocontrol Concept 40 (Novocontrol Technologies) unit for complex measurement of dielectric and electrophysical properties of materials

- Vibration magnetometer Lake Shore 7410 allows to perform measurements of magnetization of samples in the range of 10-7 to 103Am2/kg, to create magnetic fields of up to 2,3 Tl in the temperature range from 4.4 K to 450 K in an inert atmosphere or in a vacuum.

XRayThe Center of X-ray diffraction studies at St.Petersburg State University (XRD Center SPbSU) provides scientific, methodological and practical support of material research work utilizing XRD techniques. The center provides the wide range of methods; it is equipped with the leading-edge analytical instruments which makes it a unique research laboratory in Russian Federation. We work in various fields of materials research, solid state physics and chemistry and other fields related to development of advanced materials, including biologically active systems, drugs, and nano-scale functional materials
